Healthy Summer Hair Hacks

Summer is almost here, loves! The temperatures are rising, the sun is shining and we are being called outdoors! Here in the mid-west we have to take advantage of every minute of warmth and sunshine we can, because it doesn't last long!

But, Summer can reek havoc on those tresses. The humidity, the hot sun, the pool/lake water, the pony tails...can all leave us feeling like our hair needs some love! So here are some Healthy Summer Hair Hacks to help you get through this Summer with beautiful locks!

1. Get Regular Deep Conditioning Treatments/Clarifying Treatments

Between the damaging UV rays and the prolonged exposure to water filled with minerals (pool or not), your hair needs extra love in the Summer months.

A good moisturizing, deep conditioning treatment can help keep your hair healthy, shining and moisturized all Summer. I recommend getting 1-2 in-salon quality treatments each month and doing your own one a week, at home. My in-salon deep conditioning treatment can infuse your hair with extra strength, moisture or volume depending on your needs and L'anza Trauma Treatment or Moi Moi Hair Masque are great for your weekly at home care. Avoid the DIY deep conditioners as they can cause build-up on your scalp and hair making color services more difficult and unpredictable and your hair lifeless and limp.

If you spend a lot of time in the water, I highly recommend getting regular clarifying treatments along with those deep conditioning treatments. A monthly in-salon clarifying treatment will remove any mineral build-up that has accumulated on your hair (making it feel dry, brittle and in-manageable). You also have the option of incorporating the L'anza Clarifying Shampoo to your at home care to gently remove mineral build-up as needed. This is a great option for any of you who have hard water at home too.

2. Tame Fly-a-ways and Frizz

Even those of us with straight hair fight fly-a-ways and frizz this time of the year. Using a toothbrush sprayed with L'anza Keratin Healing Oil Lustrous Finishing Spray and combing it over those fly-a-ways will help keep them at bay. If you have curly hair, a product that helps block humidity from entering your hair shaft is a life saver during these humid months! Try L'anza Smooth Down Spray, L'anza Smoothing Balm or the Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Serum after washing to keep your curls bouncy, not frizzy this Summer.

A few other hacks for frizz...sweep a dryer sheet over your hair to help tame frizz and use a t-shirt to wrap your hair after washing rather than a towel.

3. Get Regular Trims

All of the damage from the elements means those ends are going to get split this Summer. Be sure to schedule regular trims (every 4-6 weeks) to keep your hair looking and feeling its best! Even an 1/8 of an inch can make all of the difference!

4. Use Sun Protectant

Protecting your scalp, skin and hair from those damaging UV rays is so important, loves! Be sure to use a good sun protectant EVERY DAY! I love Senesun SPF 30 for my skin and L'anza Color Illuminator for my scalp and hair!

5. Get Perfect Beach Waves

A sea salt spray, like L'anza's Beach Spray will give you those messy, effortless, just out of the ocean curls. Just spray in wet hair, scrunch and go!

6. Wet Your Hair With Cold Water Before Getting in the Pool

Cool water will help close the cuticle of your hair, making it harder for it to absorb the chlorine from the pool water. Better yet, wear a swim cap!

7. Avoid Super Tight Pony Tails

While those pony tails are cute and convenient, they can cause an awful lot of breakage and stress to your hair. Try looser styles like braids or twists instead or pick up some Invisabobble hair ties the next time you're in to see me; they are the least damaging hair ties out there.

8. Protect Your Color

Rich, dark colors fade quickly in the Summer sun. Be sure you are using L'anza Color Preserving Shampoo & Conditioner and that Color Illuminator to protect your color this Summer. You can also opt to add some balayage highlights to work with that natural lightening instead of fighting it!

Here's to beautiful hair all Summer long, loves! I can't wait to help you keep those locks healthy this Summer! Thank you for reading! Feel free to share!
